UCW provides innovative rail transport solutions to South Africa and selected export markets. Since 1957, 14 000 new locomotives, suburban trains and coaches have been designed and manufactured at its 37-hectare facility situated at Nigel, South Africa. Refurbishing and upgrading of rolling stock is a significant element of UCW's growth strategy.
Union Carriage & Wagon (UCW) was established in 1957 as a partnership between Commonwealth Engineering of Australia with the Budd Company of the USA and Leyland. Construction of the factory at Nigel commenced in June 1958 and occupation took place in January 1959.
